Italy: Lombardy Region offers tax exemption to low-emission vehicles

The government of Lombardy is offering an aid for those scrapping polluting vehicles and an exemption from the payment of vehicle tax for those buying new or used cars that meet Euro 5 or 6 and are powered bi-fuel or hybrid systems. The initiative is part of regional policies to protect air quality and fight against pollution and is helping reduce particulate and nitrogen oxides according to the limits imposed by national and community legislations.

Under this program, the government will award a bonus of 90 Euros for the scrapping of polluting vehicles (motorcycles, trucks, cars belonging to Euro 0, 1, 2 and 3 standards) as long as the date of the acceptance certificate issued by the collection centre authorised for scrapping is between 2 January 2019 and 31 December 2019.

Moreover, it will offer a three-year exemption from the payment of the vehicle tax to drivers that purchase (or acquire under a finance lease) clean fuel private cars in 2019 if, during the same year, a polluting vehicle is scrapped.

The green vehicles must be powered by bi-fuel (LPG/petrol or CNG/petrol) or hybrid (petrol/electric, LPG/electric or CNG/electric) systems, belonging to the M1 category (intended for passenger transport, having no more than eight seats), complying with the Euro 5 or Euro 6 emission standard.

The three-year exemption from the tax payment can be combined with the scrapping bonus. For more information, please check this link.
