The first petrol station in Cyprus selling Autogas has opened in Nicosia after securing all the necessary licences. The station, owned by oil and gas company Petrolina under Agip brand, is located on Larnaca Avenue.

According to a statement by Petrolina, it meets all the safety and environmental standards of the EU, complies with Cyprus legislation and the regulations set out by the Energy Ministry. “Business moves of this kind offer consumers more alternatives to energy use and contribute to a better quality of life,” said Energy Minister Giorgos Lakkotrypis.

Dinos Lefkaritis, director of Petrolina, explained the initiative is part of the company’s strategy to offer innovative products, adding “the company’s objective is to operate other petrol stations with LPG in the near future.”

Autogas is a new product in the Cypriot market. The political decision to allow the introduction of LPG as vehicle fuel was taken in April 2012, while the use of LPG in refuelling stations was finally sanctioned via ministerial decree back in March 2016.

There have been delays in processing and approving applications which are attributed to bureaucracy and the fact that several government departments must be consulted due to safety concerns. If you want to know more, please check this link.
