Algeria’s fleet surpasses one million vehicles fuelled by Autogas

The Commission for Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency (CEREFE) of Algeria published a report that reveals the country’s national fleet of vehicles running on Autogas surpassed the milestone of one million vehicles at the end of 2023. The use of LPG in Algeria, particularly in transport, has made significant progress since 2015, according to the public agency, which called on the State to further encourage the use of this fuel.

Drawing on the latest statistics from the energy sector, the CEREFE highlighted the “meteoric growth” of Autogas in Algeria, observed since 2015, particularly following increases in fuel prices enacted through the Finance Laws of 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2020, as well as subsidies provided for the supply and installation of LPG kits.

According to the report, compiled by the “Clean Mobility” working group comprising representatives from several ministries, the price of LPG in Algeria “is the cheapest in the world,” sold to users at a rate five times lower than that of petrol and three times lower than that of diesel.

Emphasising Algeria’s significant potential in LPG and CNG production, CEREFE stated that the development of these two products represents “the most suitable solution economically, environmentally, and health-wise.”

In this context, the commission put forward a series of suggestions to further accelerate the pace of vehicle conversion to Autogas. These recommendations include equipping all existing filling stations with LPG dispensers, increasing the number of such facilities nationwide, and bolstering the fleet of LPG tanker trucks to ensure continuous supply to service stations and avoid long queues.

The report also called for encouraging the construction of new service stations exclusively dedicated to Autogas supply. Additionally, it asked the Government to support local manufacturing of LPG kits and storage tanks.
