More and more Autogas vehicles are running on Spanish streets, driven by the attractive combination of convenient prices and lower emissions, in addition to these vehicles being able to operate in areas where more polluting counterparts are restricted.

According to the latest figures analysed by the Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers (ANFAC), more than 25,000 LPG units were sold in 2023, showing a 75% increase on the previous year’s figures.

The ANFAC estimates that 97,500 vehicles are currently running on Spanish streets, excluding the car modification market.

The Dacia Sandero was Spain’s 2023 top-selling car for overall registrations, with its LPG-powered version accounting for 60% of total retail. The brand reported that more than 50,000 Autogas units have been sold since it was launched in Spain.

Autogas vehicles are becoming increasingly popular due to their environmental benefits and economic advantages. It is a cost-effective alternative to conventional fuels, offering consumers the opportunity to save on fuel costs. Costing around 0.95 euros per litre, compared to the average cost of 1.57 euros for gasoline and 1.54 euros for diesel, according to the latest Petroleum Bulletin of the European Union.

Moreover, on the purchase of eco-friendly cars, drivers may obtain an environmental certification (ECO label), following community regulations to run in Low Emission Zones.

Additionally, the increasing availability of LPG infrastructure such as refuelling stations and the development of advanced LPG engine technologies are further driving market growth. The largest Spanish supplier, Repsol, supplies Autogas at 435 refuelling points, and Cepsa has 78 stations offering LPG supply.
