Kenya: State Department for Petroleum encourages transport sector to shift to Autogas
Last month, the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum and the Petroleum Outlets Association (POA) of Kenya organised an event that gathered industry players in the LPG sector to discuss Autogas issues in this country.
Mohamed Liban, Principal Secretary of the State Department for Petroleum, one of the divisions of the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, attended the event and said: “Those in the transport business should take advantage of the lower fuel costs accorded by LPG as an alternative transport energy solution.”
According to the State Department for Petroleum, there are nearly 20,000 vehicles that have been converted to run on Autogas in Kenya and 10 LPG stations. “Autogas has become a viable alternative to petrol and diesel, and we are committed to developing an enabling framework for the industry to grow,” the Department highlighted through its social media.
Under the framework of this event, local media interviewed other authorities that attended the meeting, including Daniel Kiptoo Bargoria, Director General of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).
“The Autogas industry is projected to grow at a fast pace, going by the current heightened interest by both vehicle owners and investors in conversion and Autogas dispensing stations. EPRA, in conjunction with Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and other industry stakeholders, have developed standards for vehicle conversion as well as Autogas stations in order to ensure the safety of the process,” he said.
In addition, POAK Chair Martin Chomba stated that Autogas is “the next frontier in the transport sector.” During the interview, he explained that the world is heading towards cleaner fuels, and that Autogas happens to be one of them. He also noted that the short-term goal is to push the 20,000-figure to 100,000 and that the opportunities in Autogas “are enormous.”
