Indian government will approve conversion of BS-6 cars to Autogas

Through a draft notification dated on January 27th 2022, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has proposed to allow retro-fitment of LPG or CNG kits as well as replacing diesel engines with LPG or CNG engines for Bharat Stage (BS)-6 vehicle models, weighing less than 3.5 tonnes.

This will let third-party companies to install this alternative fuel kits to any BS-6 petrol/diesel car. As of now, only BS4-compliant models are permitted for retro-fitment of CNG/LPG conversion kits.

Manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, and Tata Motors are offering factory-fitted CNG kits on a few of their cars, while no model comes with a factory-fitted LPG kit currently. By allowing retro-fitting in BS-6 cars, car buyers will now have a lot more options available to them.

As per the notification, the type approvals for vehicles retrofitted with LPG/CNG kits shall be valid for 3 years from the date of issue of such approval and shall be renewed every 3 years.

Currently, the draft is open for comments and suggestions, which can be sent by 27th February to the MoRTH. For more information, please check here.
